Patron

A Patron of the BOWRA Foundation serves as an esteemed ambassador, lending their influence and support to champion our mission and amplify our impact.  We are thrilled and deeply honored to have Lieutenant General Sir Freddie Viggers KCB CMG MBE DL as our Patron, standing alongside us in inspiring and empowering lives.

Freddie was commissioned into the Royal Artillery from Sandhurst in 1972 and served in Field and Anti-Tank disciplines.  He held staff appointments in Command Headquarters and the Ministry of Defence and conducted operational tours in Northern Ireland, Bosnia and in Iraq during the reconstruction effort following the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003.  He gave evidence to the Chilcott Inquiry into Iraq in 2009.

He commanded the Third Regiment Royal Horse Artillery as the Cold War was ending and his final tour before retirement in 2008 was as Adjutant General (the equivalent of the Army’s HR Director) where he was a staunch advocate of the Military Covenant, fighting to improve the lot of the Army’s soldiers and families.  On retirement, he took up the post of Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod where a severe stroke forced his early departure in 2010.

His physical recovery continues with therapy and outdoor activities.  Freddie has a natural interest in people, which led to various Trustee appointments with charities supporting veterans and the disabled as well as mentoring physiotherapy undergraduates.  He is enthusiastic about rugby, tennis, bridge and keeping healthy.

Freddie and his wife Jane married in 1973, and they have 2 children and 4 grandchildren; his family remains by far the most important and rewarding part of his life.
